Monteverde in May

What Monteverde in May looks like?

The sunny and dry season in Monteverde ends with the month of May. Low temperatures are around 66 degrees each morning, and the afternoon highs are around 81 degrees. Rainfall increases significantly over April, but rain is still primarily a late afternoon and early evening event. As you’re packing, make sure you add in your rain gear. While it might not rain everyday, it’s better to have a waterproof jacket so that you can still make the most of your time in the great outdoors.

While the increasing rain is a minor downside, May is still drier than the following months. However, that switch in weather means that there are far fewer tourists in the area. Traveling to Monteverde in May can translate to lower costs for flights, hotels and attractions. Plus, you won’t have to deal with big crowds at most major destinations.

Keep in mind that there are two national holidays that are celebrated in Monteverde in May: Labor Day, on May 1st, and Corpus Christi Day, on May 29th. On both days, expect many restaurants, museums and stores to be shut.

A great way to take advantage of the lessened crowds is to visit a normally busy attraction like the Monteverde Butterfly Garden. Sometimes, you might even end up with a private one-hour tour of the gardens if there are no other visitors when you arrive!

Just steps from the Monteverde Butterfly Garden is the small and quiet Hotel Los Jardines, one of the more appealing and affordable hotels in Monteverde Costa Rica. The hotel is conveniently located, and you can even walk to the nearby Green Restaurant. This eatery uses local ingredients and prepares a lot of organic, farm-to-table cuisine with some Costa Rican influences.
