Although July is firmly in the middle of the rainy season, it is a very popular time for travelers to head to Monteverde. Even locals are likely to take their vacations during July. Americans tend to visit Costa Rica over the 4th of July weekend, so flight may be more expensive then, and Europeans typically visit in July as well. Rainfall actually dips in July, meaning that it is less wet than June. Nonetheless, bringing along a hat and some waterproof hiking shoes is definitely a smart move.
The good news is that visiting in July means all attractions are open. While it isn’t peak season, virtually all businesses that cater to tourists will be in full swing. Whether you’re hoping for a guided tour of a coffee plantation or you’re eager to visit the local butterfly garden, you’re in luck. July is also home to one of the biggest festivals of the year: The Annexation of Guanacaste. Celebrated on July 25th, this festival involves everything from parades and bullfights to concerts.
If you’re in Monteverde at the end of July, make sure you’re participating in the festival’s activities. Some shops close, but most restaurants and vendors stay open and offer traditional cuisine. Have a drink, watch the parades and be a part of this exciting celebration that honors the history of Costa Rica.
Since July can be a busy month in Monteverde, be sure to book your accommodation well in advance. A top upscale hotel in the region is the Trapp Family Lodge, which is surrounded by stunning natural beauty and lush greenery. Nearby, be sure to try out Morphos Restaurante, a fabulous eatery serving up everything from steaks and chicken dishes along with authentic Costa Rican sides and desserts.
