Souvenir Rosewood is a souvenir shop that focuses mainly on wood working and jewelry. All of the wood working is done by stores owner, Jose Luis, who practices environmentally sustainable techniques. All of the wood is recovered from fallen branches and stumps that are collected from the local forests. His wife Danis, makes beautiful handcrafted jewelry and paintings. There is also a gorgeous orchid garden behind the store that is open for customers to visit.

Artisans Cooperative Santa Elena and Monteverde

The Artisans Cooperative, or CASEM, was founded in 1982 by a collective of eight female artists with the intention of giving greater projection and opportunities not only to themselves but also to other women in the area. Today there are over 100 members in the Cooperative and many programs to help them develop and promote their art so they can make a steady income through it. CASEM is a great place to visit if you want to support the Monteverde community and purchase beautiful pieces of artwork.

Sarah’s Gallery

Sara Dowell is a self-taught artist from San Francisco that moved to Costa Rica in 1971. Her gallery is located in her house about a quarter mile from the Cheese Factory, nestled inside the Monteverde forest. Sarah’s paintings are all watercolors inspired by her life in the cloud forest, most of them depicting the local wildlife. Most of her paintings are for sale, so this is a good spot to check out if you’re looking for some artwork to bring back with you.
