So where exactly is Monteverde? Monteverde is a small mountain community located right on the continental divide on top of the Tilaran Range in the province of Puntarenas. It sits at 4,662 feet (1,440 meters) above sea level, inside a lush and dense cloud forest. It is approximately 162 km (101 miles) from San Jose, about a 3 hour drive.
The town of Santa Elena will be the first thing you see when you first come into Monteverde. Here you can find all the private and public services that are available in the area. The biggest portion of the cloudforest can be found in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, a private nature reserve created in 1972 which has now become the most popular tourist destination in the area. Other popular points of interest in Monteverde are the Bosque Eterno de los Niños conservation area, the Bosque Noboso Preserve, Reserva Santa Elena, and Bajo Del Tigre.
Transportation to Monteverde is cheap and easy to get. For those driving all you need to do is get on the Pan-American Highway going north until you get to Miramar and then follow the signs. Two buses leave daily from San Jose to Monteverde. There are also direct buses from Puntarenas twice a day. If traveling from Guanacaste you can take a bus to Lagartos or La Irma and from there catch a direct bus to Monteverde. Travelers in La Fortuna can catch a bus to Tilaran and then one to Monteverde.
