Arenal in September

On average, September is the wettest month of the year in Arenal. Daytime temperatures are also at their lowest average, often reaching the low 70s by midday but climbing no higher. As you might be able to guess, that means September is one of the slowest tourism months in Arenal. Visiting at this time can be ideal, however, if you’re looking for fewer crowds and lower prices. Just be sure to bring along some rain gear, because it will be tough to avoid the afternoon and evening showers.

For the most part, there are no major events in Arenal in September. The one exception is Independence Day, held on September 15th. This holiday marks Costa Rica’s independence from Spain in 1821. Festivals and lantern parades are just a few of the fun cultural events that take place in local towns throughout the Arenal region.

At the northern tip of Lake Arenal is one of the most interesting and beautiful destinations in Costa Rica: Rio Celeste. It is so unusual because the waters of the river are a bright blue color. This is unlike any other river you’ve seen before, and its color is caused by a chemical reaction as two streams of water meet and mix together. This is something you have to see to believe, and it makes for truly spectacular photographs.
