Arenal in October

Although temperatures are on the rise in October, and daily highs can easily be in the 80s, it is still very much the rainy season. Be prepared for frequent rain, although it tends to be in the late afternoon into the evening. Although Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast is hot and busy in October, the crowds won’t be in Arenal. It is the final month of the year when you can hope for fewer tourists and bargain prices.

Visiting Arenal in October also means that you’ll be able to celebrate Dia de la Raza, or Columbus Day. This is a Carnival-style festival held over several days throughout the Caribbean side of the country, but even in Arenal it is a big occasion. Feasting, drinking, dancing and live music can all be expected. Wherever you’re staying in Arenal, take time to join in with the fun on this special day.

Although the local waterfalls are a big attraction year round, they will be at their finest toward the end of the rainy season. All that rain means waterfalls and even more impressive! That’s especially true for La Fortuna Waterfall. To access the waterfall, you’ll have two options: Horseback riding or hiking. Either way, you’ll arrive to see a stunning waterfall cascading into a small pool where you can also go swimming. Bring some shoes that can handle a wet environment, because you’ll almost certainly be tempted to get in the water yourself.

Unwind at the end of the day with a hearty meal at Restaurante Tiquicia. This eatery serves traditional Costa Rican fare like rice, beans and stewed meats, but you can also find fresh seafood and the traditional ceviche. Follow it up with a cold beer, and then enjoy a great night of sleep at the Selvita Lodge Arenal. Guest rooms are comfortable, traditionally decorated and close to all the activities in the area.
