Arenal Volcano National Park

The towering Arenal Volcano appears on essentially every list of “must-sees” for visitors in Costa Rica and the national park surrounding it is a fascinating mix of lush landscapes, natural hot springs, waterfalls and more tropical flora and fauna than you could ever imagine. Lake Arenal

The La Fortuna waterfall does just that, though it’s actually located quite close to the town of La Fortuna and the trail that leads to it can be done on foot or even on horseback. The river that feeds the waterfall, one of Arenal’s most popular destinations, winds through dense tropical forest until emerging seemingly out of nowhere and plummeting majestically some 70 meters into a small pool, which you can swim in.

Arenal Hanging Bridges

The Arenal Hanging Bridges, which are part of the Mistico Park, are a series of suspension bridges in the heart of the Arenal Volcano National Park. A three-kilometer (two-mile) trail through a private rainforest reserve includes a total of 16 bridges high above the ground, 10 of which are fixed bridges and 6 of which are hanging. In addition to being a fun activity itself, these bridges also provide unbeatable views of the volcano, the lake, the rainforest and the thousands of plant and animal species that call this ecosystem home. You can either complete the trail on your own or accompanied by one of the park’s expert guides.

Venado Caves

Formed millions of years ago but stumbled upon in the 1940s, the limestone Venado Caves are 2,700 meters of underground goodness, complete with underground rivers and waterfalls, dramatic stalactite and stalagmite formations, and, of course, an array of peculiar critters: bats, frogs, fish, insects, etc. Tours are guided and last about an hour and a half.

While the Arenal is the most famous volcano in, well, Arenal, there is actually a second volcano: the Cerro Chato. Dormant for some 3,500 years, the volcano has two peaks as well as a sprawling crater in the center filled with turquoise water (swimming not recommended). If you’re looking for a challenge, hikes through the tropical rainforest are magnificent, but it should be noted that climbs are pretty intense and therefore ideal for active types in good physical shape.

The fascinating EcoZoo, easily a fan favorite for youngsters, features one of Costa Rica’s most impressive collections of local reptile and amphibian species. If you’re lucky you can meet and snap a photo with the EcoZoo’s most famous resident, Eliza, an 18-foot Burmese python who often comes during serptentarium tours.

If the weather is good, be sure hike up to the lookout point (“mirador”, in Spanish) for incredible volcano views.

The Motmot Jungle

The Motmot Jungle, a conservation-minded nature endeavor located close to the Arenal dam, is a breeding center for 15 butterfly species as well as wildlife refuge. One of their specialties is the morpho butterfly, an extremely popular national species known for its beautiful coloring. The San Luis Adventure Park is most famous for its zip lines, which range from 50 to to an astounding 500 meters in length, that span between platforms between 3 and 106 meters high! Completing the whole series of zip lines is about a two-hour thrill of adrenalin-pumping rides through magnificent scenery. In addition to the canopy zip line tour, the San Luis Adventure Park also offers nature trails, rappelling, a tarzan swing, rafting and more.

Salto

“El Salto” is a delightful freshwater swimming hole located at the foot of a small waterfall. Large rocks surrounding the water are perfect for kicking back and lounging, and a fun tarzan swing over the water will bump your swimming experience up a few notches. It is conveniently located just outside of La Fortuna and not far from the entrance to the La Fortuna waterfall; even more convenient is the fact that it is totally free to enjoy!

Arenal 1968 Trail

Located just a stone’s throw from the Arenal Volcano National Park entrance is the Arenal 1968 Trail, a private network of trails on and around the route of the lava flow that occurred in, you guessed it, 1968. There are two hiking – or biking, if you prefer – trails, one longer than the other, but both will immerse you in Arenal’s tropical ecosystem. If the weather is good, be sure hike up to the lookout point (“mirador”, in Spanish) for incredible volcano views.

The Motmot Jungle

The Motmot Jungle, a conservation-minded nature endeavor located close to the Arenal dam, is a breeding center for 15 butterfly species as well as wildlife refuge. One of their specialties is the morpho butterfly, an extremely popular national species known for its beautiful coloring. The park is tucked into the lush tropical forest and you can explore its 1.5 km of trails in search of the flora and fauna that Costa Rica is so famous for: sloths, monkeys, birds, to name a few. The park opens early in the morning for bird-watching, and also offers nighttime walks to get glimpses of the numerous nocturnal animals that call Arenal home.

Food is a special, identifying factor in any culture, and learning to cook traditional dishes is a great way to immerse yourself! There are actually a bunch of places that will teach you how to whip up some of Costa Rican specialties. One option is the Tropical Cooking Class, a 3.5 hour class held in an open-air kitchen at the Lava Lounge, near the La Fortuna waterfall. Be sure to book your spot in advance! The Desafío Adventure Company also offers a cooking class held on a local farm where you’ll learn about and use local products in the creation of a typical Costa Rican meal. Finally, the Finca Paraíso Orgánico offers two-hour cooking classes held on an organic farm.

La Fortuna

La Fortuna, which translates to “Fortune” or “Luck”, is a peaceful town that serves as a base camp for the endless activities and attractions throughout the Arenal area. Originally named El Burío, the town was later renamed “La Fortuna”… and with good reason. On the one hand, it is surrounded by fertile lands yielding profitable plantations like yucca and papaya, and on the other hand, it escaped the massive 1968 volcano eruption unscathed, while numerous other towns in the area were completely destroyed. Nowadays, as the base camp for Arenal tourism, you’ll find all sorts of amenities here, ranging from pharmacies and supermarkets to hotels, banks and restaurants.
